Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from New Jersey homeowners — organized by service. Don't see yours? Give us a call.

Yes. We install both. The right choice depends on your subfloor type, which level of the home you're flooring, moisture conditions, and your preferences. We'll walk you through both options and make a recommendation during your free in-home estimate.
Some dust is inevitable during removal and cutting, but we use containment methods and clean up thoroughly at the end of each day.
In many cases, wood floors respond to the lower humidity by contracting or shrinking. If the wood contracts significantly, small gaps may appear between the boards. This is normal but can be prevented with proper precautions. One way to help your wood floors keep their original look and shape is to make sure your home has proper humidity controls in place. This means using a humidifier to maintain optimal moisture levels. Keeping levels above 40% in the winter will help prevent gaps from appearing.
Getting a perfect match is not a promise we will make. That said, our crews are the best of the best and will show you samples so you can make an informed decision before we apply any stain.
Yes. Try to avoid foam-backed rugs, which can retain moisture and dirt, thus causing damage to the flooring. Instead, look for waffle-pattern backed rugs. These are a much safer option. We also recommend you opt for natural, organic materials when possible.
Our Dust Containment System is certified as being 99% dust free. It is the best system on the market today.
Our talented technicians will sand a small area of your floor and lay up to 5 samples for you to choose from. This is the best way to see how the stain will look; taking into account the lighting, wall colors, porousness of your wood floors and various other factors.
A large benefit to our water-based polyurethane is that it is quick-drying. Roughly 3 hours after the coat has been applied, you can walk on the floor. Please do so in a clean, dry rubber-soled shoe, no bare foot or socks. Furniture can go back 24 hours after the final coat has been applied. We suggest you wait 3 full days before laying area rugs.
Most refinishing jobs take 2–4 days: one day for sanding and staining, then 1–2 days for finishing coats with proper dry time between each coat.
You need to be available on day one for stain selection — that's the only time we require you to be on-site. After that, it really depends on what you can comfortably live with. Most of our clients stay home throughout the entire refinishing process.
Crown molding, baseboards, door casings, chair rails, window and door jambs, paneling, and beadboard.
Yes. We stain or finish trim to complement your floor color and sheen level for a unified look throughout the home.
Yes. We install and finish trim in-house. No subcontracting, no handoffs.
Absolutely. We frequently bundle trim with flooring projects. Same crew, same timeline. It's more efficient and more affordable.
Yes. If you have specific profile requests or want to match existing trim in an older home, we can source and install custom millwork.
Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, and surrounding NJ counties.
We handle tread replacement, full railing systems, baluster upgrades, and complete staircase builds for both new construction and renovations.
The start of work depends on our current job schedule as well as the material options you choose. Some materials may have to be custom-ordered and can take several weeks to be delivered. We will keep you updated on the status of your project as often as possible. We welcome your cooperation and look forward to working closely with you through every phase of your project with us.
Yes. Stain matching is one of our specialties. We test and blend finishes to match your existing floors as closely as possible.
Unfortunately, no. Stairs, unlike floors, are a custom job—no two stair jobs are ever alike. The best way to get an estimate on the cost of stair work is to have one of our experts come out and give you an in-person review of your project. We can then present you with the best options for your stairs.
Yes. Staircases must meet certain building codes to ensure they are safe for users. Because Gorsegner Brothers has been family-owned and locally operated in New Jersey for 75 years, we are very familiar with the state's building codes.
Yes, though we most commonly paint alongside flooring or trim work. Either way, the standard is the same.
Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and accent features. We also do exterior painting. Please reach out to our office to schedule a free estimate! Text us at 732.808.2224, or give us a call at 732.275.2026.
We use Benjamin Moore paint— only the best paint for the job will do. If you have a preferred brand other than Benjamin Moore, please just let our office know as soon as you can. We're happy to work with your design plans.
Yes. That's actually the most efficient approach. We coordinate the sequence so painting doesn't interfere with your floors.
We clean, sand, fill, tape, and prime as needed. Every surface gets the attention it deserves.
We handle both. Full bathroom remodels — demolition, waterproofing, tile, fixtures, vanities, and trim — as well as standalone tile work if that's all that's needed. We'll scope it correctly during the consultation.
We specialize in partial kitchen remodeling — primarily tile work including backsplashes, floor tile, countertop surrounds, and related carpentry and trim. We don't do full cabinet replacements or major plumbing rerouting, but we can coordinate with other trades as needed.
A standard bathroom remodel typically takes 1–2 weeks depending on scope. Tile-only projects can often be completed in 3–5 days. We'll give you a specific timeline at the estimate — and we stick to it.
Yes — we install electric radiant heat underlayment beneath tile floors before setting the tile. It's a popular add-on for bathroom remodels and mudrooms. Just let us know during the consultation and we'll include it in the quote.
We'll do our best to source a close match, but tile matching isn't always possible if the original tile has been discontinued. We'll assess the situation during the consultation and give you our honest options — including creative ways to blend new and existing tile.
